The Process...

Coming from a background in both web and database development, and Interior Design, I have learned to listen closely to the customer. If there is one thing I've learned, it is that the better I understand what you are looking for from the very beginning, the less time it will take me to give you something you are satisfied with. And in the end, it's YOU that must be happy. So, I will always begin by asking you what you want.

"But I don't know what I want!" Yep, I hear it all the time. But, you do. You've likely seen a website that grabbed your attention, or perhaps it was just a certain font that you thought was particulary nice. Designing your blog is much like designing your home - sometimes you don't know what you want until you see it. As an Interior Designer, I always told clients to look through magazines and pull out images that appealed to them. It did not even need to be a picture of a room - it might just be an image that "felt" nice to them.

Everyone is drawn to certain styles, certain colors, and certain elements of design. Balance, form, line, contrast - these are all things that come into play. Some questions to ask yourself as you surf the Internet looking at sites...

  • Do you like flowing forms or straight edges?
  • How symetrical do you like a page to look?
  • Do you like dark colors, light colors, muted tones, bright tones, combination of any of these?
  • Can you give a name to your style? Shabby Chic, Grungy, Old World, Modern, Contemporary, Country, French, Baroque, scrapbook style... or other...or combination?
  • What are your favorite colors?
  • Are there objects you'd like to incorporate into your blog or watermark? A favorite animal, car, flower...what ever it may be. What about other items and shapes like buttons, bows, stars, circles, flowers, stitching, flourishes/swirls.
  • Do you like a simple, clean look - or lots of layers and embellishments?
  • What is the name of your blog, and why did you name it that?

Still not sure what you like? Sometimes it's easier to explain what you don't like. Considering all the questions above, think about what you do NOT want to have on your blog. Maybe you've seen a web site that just totally turned you off for some reason. Send me a link and tell me what you did not like about it (I promise, I won't tell them you don't like their site).

If it's easier to just send me images as attachments, or links to web sites or photos - do that. Just be sure to tell me what you like or don't like about them.

Just remember, the more information you give me from the beginning - the fewer changes will need to be made, and the faster you'll get what you want.
